Detection to Action: Providence Fire July 2024

Our collaborators at the Breathe Providence Network have shown how improved detection of air pollutants can lead to actionable change in communities.

On July 10th, 2024, a recycled metals facility caught on fire in Providence Rhode Island, producing a large pollution plume that traveled across the city. While detecting the data in real-time, the Breathe Providence team was able to share a statement and figures with local news outlets to increase awareness of the event. Ultimately, the team was contacted for an affidavit in a case to investigate and shut down the facility for its practices.

Real-time and high resolution monitoring of air pollution is important for the improving the health of populations in cities and holding polluters accountable for their actions!
